View from my coffee cup

THERE ARE CERTAIN EXPECTATIONS.

It was chilly this morning; folks were running in and out of the coffee shop. Who is the writer I’ve been hearing about? Someone asked.  Eyes looked at me.

The man informed me that he is interested in writing a memoir and he is looking for “pointers” from me. Me?

When folks identify authors they invariably expect an amount of direction, mentor-ship, and even consultation, as a matter of course, on the Genre of their choice.

With memoir writing, for example, I say, it depends on what the person is looking to achieve from writhing his or her memoir. It depends on whether the memoir will be to highlight family history, make money from book sales or just to get some “things” off their chests. Whatever, the reasons for writing, be honest about what you write.

As an inspirational writer, I draw from my life experiences to inspire others, by writing about issues affecting my own life and, making suggestions about how to deal with such issues.

In addition to giving the man in the coffee shop pertinent advice, I said: Sir, always write from the heart.
